Program Description:

The Duke Driving Program provides a clinical evaluation by an occupational therapist, focused on the components required for driving safety: physical strength and coordination, cognition, vision/ perceptual skills, and reaction time. This evaluation would be useful for anyone whose driving skills may have been impaired by stroke, head injury, orthopedic injuries, visual impairment, memory disorders, aging or other conditions. A 2 to 2.5 hour clinical evaluation is performed at Duke Health Center at Lenox Baker. A recommendation for a behind-the-wheel evaluation is based on the findings of the clinical driving evaluation. A physician referral is NOT required. The clinical driving evaluation is NOT billable to medical insurance carriers. The behind-the-wheel evaluation is also not billable to insurance. Both of these evaluations are considered medical expenses and can be submitted for tax reimbursement. All reports and recommendations will be faxed to the referring physician. If a client is referred by NC DMV, the report will also be faxed directly to the NC DMV Medical Review Board. The final decision to drive, or discontinue driving, is made by the client’s referring physician or DMV. The occupational therapist provides professional recommendations but, by law, cannot make the final decision.
