Program Description:

The Food Assistance Program, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), (once referred to as Food Stamps), helps low-income households with their monthly food expenses. Food Assistance is issued through Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT), which means that benefits are deposited monthly into the household's EBT account. Households are issued a card and pay for their groceries at food stores by using the card, which works like a debit card, at the checkout counter. The cost of the purchased groceries is deducted electronically from the EBT account. Eligibility is based on income and reserve (assets). Deductions may be taken from income to arrive at a net income. Deductions include some medical bills, shelter, and utility costs. Food assistance eligibility is based on the household situation. A food assistance "household" can be an individual living under the same roof who does not purchase and prepare food with the other household members. Certain elderly or disabled persons can be eligible as a separate household even if they purchase and prepare meals with others in the home. *Note: Applications may also be taken at the following locations: Eastern Regional Center, 1002 Dogwood Lane, Zebulon (404-3900) Northern Regional Center, 350 E. Holding Avenue, Wake Forest (562-6300) Southern Regional Center, 130 N. Judd Parkway, Fuquay-Varina (557-2501) A copy of the food assistance application may be found online at: http://info.dhhs.state.nc.us/olm/forms/dss/dss-8207.pdf
