Manages public housing for Wake County residents. Approximately 3 years wait list. Also manages Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program. However, because of the very extensive wait list (5+ years), the Housing Authority stopped accepting new applications for Section 8 on 8/13/2009...10/25/2017 voucher list still closed. Housing Choice Vouchers can be used toward any residential property whose owner is willing to participate in the Section 8 program. The Housing Authority keeps a list of participating landlords, but encourages applicants to also do their own search for landlords who are not on that list and are willing to participate in Section 8. Must be at least age 18 or an emancipated minor to participate in the regular Housing Choice Vouchers program. Section 8 non-elderly disabled (NED) vouchers are only available to disabled individuals under the age of 62. Once a person reaches 62, they are no longer eligible for disabled vouchers unless their name was on the waiting list prior to age 62.
