SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is a NEEDS-based program, in contrast to regular Social Security. Supplemental Security is based on assets and income, not amount of time worked. SSI recipients must be 65 years of age, disabled, or blind, in addition to having low income and resources. As of January 1, 2015, the maximum SSI benefit amount is $733 for a single person or $1,100 for a couple. Other countable income must be less than this amount in order to qualify for the benefit; $20 of unearned income and $65 of earned income, plus 1/2 of additional earned income, can be excluded in determining countable income. The benefit received by the client is the difference between the SSI benefit amount and the client's countable income. Resources (assets) must be less than $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple. When applying for SSI, one will need: proof of age, latest W-2 or self-employment tax return, earnings estimate, bank information, and marriage, military, etc. information. If accepted by SSI, the benefit check is direct-deposited into bank account. SSI recipients in North Carolina are also automatically eligible for Medicaid.
