Program Description:

Assists with consumer problems and unfair, deceptive trade practices by businesses. Can notify consumers if businesses have had any complaints filed against them. Website provides instructions about how to file a complaint, and also has consumer tips including a summary of the obligations of landlords and the rights of tenants. The AG's office is also active in the Senior Consumer Fraud Task Force, and provides information on scams targeting senior citizens. A list of previous alerts can be found at: http://www.dhhs.state.nc.us/aging/fraud/cfalert.htm The AG's office and the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services have developed a Fraud Victim Assistance Program, in which trained volunteers work with elderly repeat victims of frauds and scams in order to prevent them from being victimized again. This effort, which initially focused on telemarketing fraud, is now being opened to victims of other types of fraud, including home repair, sweepstakes, and e-mail scams. Ask for the Elder Fraud Duty Agent if calling specifically about this program.
