Guardian Alert 911 is an emergency signaling device that works like a cordless phone, but is lightweight enough to wear around the neck, on a belt, or carry in a pocket. When the recessed button is depressed for at least 2 seconds, the device calls 911 via a base unit connected to a phone line. The user can then speak with the 911 operator directly through the pendant, providing real 2-way communication even when the client is not near the base unit. The device only dials 911, not a monitoring center, and is NOT set up to alert family members or other caregivers. It uses a AAA alkaline battery (included) which is said to be good for a year in standby mode or 30 minutes of talk time. Because the device is purchased outright and does not have a monitoring feature, there is no activation fee, monthly fee or contract. The device costs approximately $200 at retail. In Wake County, may be available at local pharmacies or can be ordered from LogicMark.com. Another product, called Freedom Alert, allows you to program up to 4 numbers, so that the user can call a family member, neighbor, or caregiver, addition to 911. This is also a 2-way voice pendant. Cost is approximately $300 with no activation fee, monthly fee or contract.
