Program Details

Hours: Centralized Intake Unit: Mon-Fri, 8:30AM to 4:30PM; and Mon & Thurs, 5:30-8:30PM Senior Helpline: Mon-Fri, 9-11AM & 1-3PM
Eligibility: Age/ income criteria will be discussed during interview. Must be age 60 for Senior Legal Helpline. Priority given to seniors with the greatest economic need.
Fees: Services are free if income guidelines can be met. Also, some free services may be available for those 60 years of age or older, regardless of income.
Intake Process: Call (866) 219-5262, toll-free, for telephone interview from all counties served. Online application available on website.
Service Area: The Raleigh office serves Wake and Johnston Counties. Helpline serves all NC counties.

Program Description:

LANC is a non-profit law firm that provides free legal service in civil (non-criminal) matters to low-income people in order to ensure equal access to justice and to remove legal barriers to economic opportunity. The Senior Legal Helpline is available to North Carolinians who are at least age 60. No income limitations apply. The Senior Legal Helpline does not handle criminal, personal injury, or fee-generated cases. LANC website now includes an online interactive interview that guides prospective clients through an application for services. Go to: ww2.legalaidnc.org/apply/ LANC assistance may include: Advice - attorneys can answer legal questions and/ or offer advice. Brief Service - attorneys can write letters and/ or place phone calls to help resolve problems. Information - attorneys can review legal documents, clarify issues, provide options, and may give referrals to other appropriate providers and/ or to the LANC office. Full Representation - on cases that meet LANC's priorities and are within the office's resources to handle. Those referred to the LANC office may receive help in the following areas: *Civil Law - includes, but is not limited to, durable powers of attorney, wills, living wills, and healthcare powers of attorney. *Family Law - includes advice regarding custody and domestic violence issues; (no longer able to assist with divorce, separation, child support, or termination of parental rights issues). *Housing Law - includes landlord/ tenant issues, foreclosure and home ownership; (separate Fair Housing Helpline listed above for those experiencing housing discrimination). *Employment Law - includes unemployment insurance denials, unfair discharge & discrimination. *Consumer Law - includes Purchases, Contracts, Collection, Credit. LANC attorneys will advocate at the level of hearings and appeals boards, commissions and/ or committees. LANC can also assist with obtaining benefits being unfairly withheld by Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, SSI, food assistance, and Temporary Aid for Needy Families (TANF). LANC staff are also available for consultation at Senior Centers and the Tucker Street Nutrition Site on a rotating basis. This agency also handles screening and referral of clients to the Wake County Volunteer Lawyers Program which offers free legal assistance by volunteer lawyers in conjunction with the Wake County Bar Association. LANC is also a part of the NC Navigator Consortium that provides free, in-person help to North Carolina consumers seeking to enroll in affordable health insurance plans on the Health Insurance Marketplace.
