Foster Grandparents must be at least 55 years old, meet income guidelines, and capable of serving children in circumstances that limit their academic, social, or emotional development, or with exceptional and special needs. Volunteers serve 4 hours per day, 5 days per week, in public elementary school settings. In return, they receive a modest tax-free stipend to cover the cost of volunteering, transportation and meal assistance, accident and liability insurance, and an annual physical exam. 20 hours of pre-service orientation and training, plus 4 hours of monthly in-service training, are required. The volunteers are assigned to children on a one-to-one basis during their 5-day, 20-hour per week service.
