Medicaid is health insurance funded by federal and state money, for very low-income people. There are several types of Medicaid, one of which is provided to Aged, Blind, or Disabled people. Recipients in this category must be over 65, blind, or disabled, as well as meeting financial guidelines. Note that this is different from Medicare, which is not based on income. Most people over 65 have Medicare, but only very low-income seniors can get Medicaid. A. REGULAR MEDICAID pays for hospitalizations. Also pays (with restrictions) for physicians' charges, hospice care, prescription drugs, home health, mental health, outpatient labs, x-rays, medical equipment and nursing care. For people with Medicare, Medicaid acts as supplemental insurance. *Financial Eligibility: Individual and couple income eligibility changes once or twice a year (usually April 1), so you must call Medicaid for the most recent income maximum (SSI is not counted, however Social Security income is counted). As of 4/01/17, the cut-off for individuals is $1,005 per month and couples is $1,354 per month. Even if the income is above these limits, it is possible to still become eligible after meeting a deductible with incurred medical bills, within a six-month time frame. Assets cannot be above $2,000 for an individual, or $3,000 for a couple. Individuals who qualify for Medicaid receive a gray Medicaid card annually -- this replaces the old monthly "blue cards". B. MEDICARE SAVINGS PROGRAM (also referred to as Medicare-Aid, MQB or QMB) assists with premiums and co-pays not covered by Medicare, and has higher income and asset limits than regular Medicaid.
