Program Description:

Provides information on Veteran's benefits through the toll-free telephone numbers and the internet. See below for wartime veteran pension, prescription drug, and Medicare supplement (Tri-Care). Local veteran benefit specialists are available to help determine eligibility. Wartime Veteran Pension for low-income veterans and widows: Provides supplemental income for wartime veterans on a sliding scale according to veteran's assets, to supplement household income up to $985 per month or widow of wartime veteran up to $661 per month. May be higher if vet or dependent has extensive medical bills. Pension makes up the difference between actual income and stated amount. Prescription benefit for all honorably discharged veterans: Veteran must be enrolled in VA and must be seen by a VA doctor, can receive a 30-day supply of a prescription for $8 or less. Funding is year-to-year based on congressional appropriations. Also, a Medicare supplement called Tri-Care covers all military retirees (over 20 years), spouses, widowed survivors, and other dependents over age 65 at no cost. Must be enrolled in Medicare Part B and Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System database The Raleigh Vet Center provides counseling and referral services to combat veterans and their families.
