Individuals may get one free copy of their credit report annually from each of the three credit reporting agencies. For the purposes of monitoring and protecting against identity theft, law enforcement and consumer protection professionals recommend checking one of the three every four months, since most of the information will be the same among the three agencies. The web site provides an easy way of accessing this information. You must enter your name, social security number, date of birth, and address, and then verify several pieces of information. You are then able to access your report, including any negative information, accounts listed, etc. There is a process for disputing incorrect information you may discover on the report. You may also request credit reports by phone at the toll-free number listed above, or by writing to the address listed with a copy of the Request Form you can download from the web site.
